Figure 1. Peripheral smear of a 35 year old white male who presented with fever and chills shortly after returning from a business trip to the west coast of Africa. Thick area the smear shows a trophozoite ring form of P. vivax in the red blood cell.

Figure 2. In another area of the same peripheral smear an ameboid trophozoite is present in an enlarged RBC. Fine round pink dots (Schuffner dots) are also present in the infected cell.
