Figure 1. An 8 year old male who was being evaluated for an upper respiratory infection was noted to be mildly anemic on his CBC. A peripheral blood smear at low magnification shows that the vast majority of the RBCs to have an elliptical shape. A minor population of normal shaped RBCs can be seen scattered throughout the smear.
Figure 2. At a higher magnification, the predominance of the elliptical shaped RBCs is even more apparent. In addition a few RBCs with irregularities of their cytoplasmic borders or with cytoplasmic protrustions can be seem.
