Two features required for the definition of osteoclast are demonstrated here: proximity to bone and "feet" or a sealing zone that form the resorption bay necessary to the function of the osteoclast, bone resorption. In addition, as a polar cell, the smooth upper and "ruffled" lower membrane also typifies the osteoclast. Hematoxylin and Eosin stain of mouse bone at 1000x.
