Figure 1. Bone marrow fibrosis (hematoxylin and eosin stain, low power). This is a 72-year-old woman with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and marrow fibrosis. Fibroblasts and connective tissue contribute to a swirling pattern. Hemosiderin-laden macrophages are evident, due to red blood cell transfusions and secondary hemochromatosis.
