Langerhans cell histiocytosis

View larger version (159K): [in this window] [in a new window]   Figure 1. Lymph node biopsy from a 16-year-old female who presented with massive cervical lymphadenopathy. The histology of the node was consistent with a diagnosis of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML). However, one area of the biopsy showed an infiltrate distinct from SHML. A low-power view of the lesion is shown. Small, bland appearing lymphocytes are noted intermixed with abundant eosinophils.

Cytoplasm appears to be abundant and is eosinophilic. Clusters of eosinophils are noted surrounding the lymphoid infiltrate.
