Platelet satellitism

View larger version (124K): [in this window] [in a new window]   Figure 1. Pseudothrombocytopenia secondary to platelet satellitism is illustrated in this image. Platelets are shown to adhere to the cytoplasmic membrane of two of the PMNs present on this peripheral blood smear. This phenomenon is an in vitro artifact that occurs with EDTA anticoagulant. Collection of the blood specimen in either sodium citrate or heparin corrects the abnormality.
